Common Car Crash Injuries

Car accidents often lead to musculoskeletal injuries, with common issues including neck pain, back stiffness, and limited range of motion. Whiplash is a frequent consequence of sudden acceleration or deceleration and can affect both bones and soft tissues. Symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Restricted movement
  • Neck muscle spasms
  • Tingling
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

Other potential injuries include:

  • Damage to neck ligaments
  • Spinal fractures
  • SI joint pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Disc-related problems
  • Sprains and bruises

ICBC rehabilitation offers a holistic and multi-faceted approach to healing your injuries. It integrates physiotherapy, kinesiology, clinical counseling, and registered massage therapy. Our dedicated multi-disciplinary team works together to put you on the road to recovery.

  • After a car accident, you can experience anxiety about driving, persistent fear, or intrusive thoughts related to the accident. Symptoms like heightened stress, difficulty sleeping, or trouble concentrating can also arise. Counseling provides a valuable opportunity to address these challenges with a qualified mental health professional. ICBC rehabilitation includes access to counseling sessions to address these emotional challenges.

Through counseling, you can process your experience, explore your emotions, and gain coping strategies to help you move forward. A counselor can support you in managing anxiety, reducing stress, and rebuilding confidence, especially when it comes to driving and resuming daily activities after the accident.

  • Following a car accident, you might experience muscle tension, pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion, especially in areas like the neck and back. As part of your ICBC rehabilitation, massage therapy can effectively address these issues by relieving muscle tension and improving circulation. Techniques such as deep tissue massage and trigger point therapy help alleviate pain, reduce stiffness, and promote faster healing.

  • Physiotherapy is a modality that helps restore movement, strength, and function impaired by car accident injuries. Common injuries from car crashes include whiplash, neck and back pain, muscle strains, and ligament sprains. Our physiotherapists start with a thorough musculoskeletal assessment. Based on their assessment findings, they will develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to your injuries. Treatment often involve:

    • Manual therapy to improve joint mobility and reduce muscle tension, which is particularly effective for treating whiplash and back pain.
    • Soft tissue release focuses on relieving tension in specific muscle areas by targeting scar tissue and adhesions, helping to reduce pain and restore muscle flexibility.
    • Targeted exercises are prescribed to enhance strength and flexibility, aiding recovery from muscle strains and improving overall function.
    • Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) or dry needling can be used to address deep muscle pain and trigger points, providing relief for persistent pain conditions and muscle injuries.
    • A physio-designed home exercise program aids car crash recovery by restoring mobility, strengthening muscles, managing pain, and enhancing functional recovery. It ensures continuous, targeted rehabilitation for a quicker and more complete recovery.
    • Education is at the heart of every treatment and rehab program at Bump. By understanding your injuries and learning how to manage pain, you’re empowered to take control of your recovery.
  • Post-accident symptoms can benefit greatly from kinesiology. This active treatment approach involves analyzing your movement patterns to manage injuries and enhance physical function. Our kinesiologists design customized exercise programs to address your recovery needs.

By guiding you through these exercises, they help you actively engage your body to promote healing and recovery. Kinesiology complements your rehabilitation treatments, enhancing strength, flexibility, and balance. Working with a kinesiologist is a vital part of your ICBC rehabilitation program and recovery process, ensuring a well-rounded approach to achieving optimal healing and functional improvement.
