Amy Tao, Registered Physiotherapist, Clinical Pilates Instructor, Clinical Educator
B.Sc.(Kin), BFA, MPT
Other designations: CAFCI, STOTT PILATES® Rehab Mat and Reformer (Levels 1&2)
I graduated from the Master of Physical Therapy program at UBC in 2012 after completing both a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at Simon Fraser in 2006. In between degrees, I worked for many years as a Pilates instructor and kinesiologist to support myself as a professional contemporary dancer in Vancouver.
Now, as a mother of two young and energetic boys, I understand the challenge of taking care of yourself while trying to meet the physical and emotional needs of others. Having personally experienced pubic symphysis dysfunction and issues with prolapse and incontinence with my pregnancies, I discovered the value of women’s health and pelvic floor physiotherapy and became motivated to pursue further training in this area. I have recently taken Diane Lee’s “The Abdominal Wall After Pregnancy & Diastasis Rectus Abdominus” course as well as completed Levels 1 & 2 of STOTT PILATES® Rehab Mat and Reformer. I am pursuing pelvic floor training through the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute and have now completed my Level 1.
My treatment philosophy is to address the whole person and I have a broad range of experience as a physiotherapist treating orthopaedic and neurological conditions in both hospital and clinic settings. I am dedicated to continuing education and have taken many post-graduate courses including treatment of the SI joint/pelvis, vertigo/vestibular rehab and facial neuromuscular retraining for conditions such as Bell’s Palsy. I am also fully certified in anatomical acupuncture. My passion is in empowering clients through movement and Pilates is a fantastic method for improving core stability and function, increasing mindfulness/body awareness, and developing a balanced body that will allow you to keep doing the activities you love!
